CARBON UNDER PRESSURE

2024 NYU Collaborative Arts Thesis

As a visual artist, I explore the world and its darker forces through a lens of compassion. Being confronted with harsh realities, though uncomfortable, is crucial. I firmly believe that when we shed light on something that is scary and taboo, we gain ground in the battle against the fear that these things evoke. In my piece “Carbon Under Pressure”, I focus on the realities of self-inflicted pain to achieve what society has deemed most important. The things that end up being deemed most important often come from places of greed and ego. In order to truly expose these afflictions, it is important to reveal the process and its own ironic parallel. The painstaking process endured to create the story that can illustrate the extremes of self-mutilation, both mental and physical, to which many find themselves drawn, whether through greed, desperation, or anguish. Every stitch contributes to the sewn illustration and becomes integral, there is no way to rush the process. Therefore the process becomes an embodiment of the pressure and sacrifice of time. This sacrifice becomes a slow and sometimes tedious process, and the filming of the stop motion is the calm meditative time. The desperation for a complete and final piece that is perfection is what drives the process, fighting both against and with the love and joy of creating. Explore the process, examine the materials, and consider those around you, everyone has a battle but to fight against self destruction is essential.
